This information is intended for staff at Rainbow:
In each Nursery there is a ‘team’ phone. This phone has a camera facility on it and can be used to take pictures. From time to time staff may also take pictures with their own camera phones.
Photos that are taken may not be shared with anyone outside the nursery, and staff should not show the pictures to anyone apart from other staff members on their team, or those in leadership roles at the nursery.
Any pictures taken should be posted on the Whatsup Group called ‘Rainbow Pix’. Please refer to the manager if you are not a member of the group, and you can be added. Once posted, you should delete the pictures from your phone.
Cover staff should never take pictures of children, and permanent staff should help to police this rule, asking any cover staff to put away their phones if they take them out during a shift.
There follows some key guidelines for taking pictures.
- Try to post photos of all children more or less equally – so we get a good mix of all the children. All the parents want to see pictures of their own children!! (Apart from those who have not signed the release form!)
- Avoid just taking ‘cute’ pictures… instead aim for ‘action shots’ of children taking part in activities, using the equipment and generally showing off our activities and facilities and their skills!
- Try to post at least a few pictures of children doing each of the planned activities everyday
- Think carefully about the background and how things look around the action. For example we want to avoid pictures where there are stacked chairs, or ‘mess’ in the background. These photos go public – we want to show off our best work!
- Make sure that you don’t take pictures of banned children! The logo on the Pix group lists all the children that cannot have their picture taken.
- No nudity! Please only take pictures of children who are dressed
- Its OK to take pictures of activities you have set up – without children in them – this is also a great way of showing off our best work.
- Try to post a variety of pictures, rather than many which look the same
- Children should look happy and engaged in the pictures, please avoid pictures of children who are crying or sad.
- Pictures should always show children in empowering positions and roles, not passive. For example – take pictures of children feeding themselves, not being fed!
- Take pictures of staff interacting with the children and leading activities
- Try to make sure all parts of the day are represented sometimes; including circle time, snack time, outside time, as well as the planned activities
- When posting pictures DO use captions, so when the administrator posts them, she or he can add a caption to the facebook picture!
What happens to the pictures once they are posted on the Pix group:
- The managers often forward pictures directly to parents
- Sometimes pictures are used on our website
- The administrator posts all each week on Facebook.
